Are You Jellin'?

The late philosopher Karl Marx once said, "History repeats itself, first as a tragedy, second as a farce." There are many instances where Marx's quote has been deemed true, and the fashion world is no exception. One of the newest fashion comebacks is the once incredibly popular jelly sandal.

Made from PVC, and super popular in the 80s and 90s, though seen as a slight tragedy in the early 2000s, jelly sandals have been around for a long time and are starting to creep back up on the relevance scale in the fashion world. Now, they are coming back like the classics they are with such things as a heel to give them a little lift; and with a twist, coming in solid, pastel colors to better fit into modern day fashion.

Sometimes, you can't help but conform to the latest fashion trends, no matter how hard you try, but are you positive jelly sandals are right for you? I've come up with some pros and cons to owning jelly sandals to help you decide if you're ready for the rubber.

#119's Pros and Cons List : Jelly Sandals

- Pro: They're water proof!

Having rubber shoes = no more worrying about your new kicks getting ruined by the rain or puddles. How awesome is that?!

- Con: Sweaty feet (Ew.)

If you live in an area where beating the heat is not an easy task, and you are not a fan of smelly feet, jelly sandals may not be for you. The humidity and heat will def make your feet sweat, which can lead to horrendous foot odor. R.I.P. to your sense of smell.

- Pro: They're hella comfortable

If you have never owned a pair of jelly sandals, you are definitely missing out on the amazing comfort they provide for your feet. Like walking on little PVC clouds *sigh*.

- Con: Get ready for the tan lines

If you're willing to rock the jellies, beware of the hideous tan lines they will leave behind. Though they are perfect to wear to the pool or the beach, your multi-toned feet will be more unpleasant than you think...Trust me.

- Pro: They don't cost a fortune

Buying a pair of jelly sandals won't break the bank! Though prices do vary, expect to spend no more than $45 and no less than $15 for a decent pair of sandals. Can I get an 'Amen'?!?

- Con: They can pinch the f**k out of your feet

If you've ever worn jelly sandals before, you know the undeniable pain that is jelly sandal pinching (JSP), caused by two pieces of the woven plastic laying too close together. Make sure you are able to try your shoes on in person so you know you have the proper size shoe, ensuring you escape the horror, hurt, and sadness that is JSP.

So, is Marx's quote right, in that a jelly sandal repeat is a joke? That is completely up to you, my friends. Either you wear the jellies with pride, or casually toss them aside.

  1. I feel like we should melt them all down and repurpose them into something more useful, like say anything else made of plastic.
