Spotlight On: The Botanical Trend

We all know how it goes: as a city-dwelling early twentysomething, chances are your apartment is generally lackluster. My first place in Boston had a fantastic view of a concrete wall, and my second gave me an ever-fascinating glimpse into the lives of four frat brothers. Huge improvement, right?

More often than not, you can't paint, put holes in the wall, or switch out hideous wall-to-wall carpeting. So how do you realistically breathe a little life into an underwhelming apartment? Enter greenery.

For some months now, using plants as decor has been one of the easiest (not to mention trendiest) way to update your space. Every mid century-modern house tour and bohemian oasis is overflowing with lush plant life, and it makes all the difference - especially if, like me, your view is a little lacking.

Whether it be in a classic terracotta pot, a simple glass terrarium, or a macrame plant hanger, a little pop of green will freshen up any room. Pick hassle-free clean-air plants like mother-in-law's tongue, lady palms, or fiddle leaf figs. These resilient plants will look great and keep you breathing a little easier.

Don't exactly have a green thumb? Don't stress. Faux plants, once a total no-no, are now much more widely accepted (and believable).
