College Guide To Personal Growth
Much to my surprise, college did not play out like my favorite movie Stomp The Yard. Somewhere along this lonely road, I came to the harsh realization that very few men on campus look as good as Columbus Short and even fewer can dance (????) It took me two years to realize that this precious time I'm digging a debt hole the size of the Grand Canyon for was not meant to be wasted attempting to follow my peers in some Hollywood-based steps to the finish line. Rather, this time has the sole purpose of giving us the materials to pave our own paths (hence the title).
Walk with us as we break down #119's College Guide To Personal Growth:
STEP 1: Try new things
As a freshman, you are bombarded with a never-ending list of all the clubs you could join as extra curricular activities, but more often than not, students choose clubs for the sake of their resume rather than for the sake of enjoyment. This is a personal growth no-no. If you want to join the pottery club because you'e damn good at crafting vases, DO IT. College is a time for exploration of interests, so avoid making the choice to only join the finance club if you're already a finance major....
STEP 2: Cut them off
College is not high school (TYBG). If you are slightly over someone's attitude and are ready to cut them out of your life, as mean as it sounds, college makes this extremely do-able. Gone are the days where you were forced to tolerate a person you no longer see eye-to-eye with because he or she is in all of your classes. College has a way of allowing us to remove the negativity in our lives and encourages growth in positive and safe surroundings. K Camp knew what he was talking about.
STEP 3: Do you, boo.
I cannot tell you how many times I've received side-eyes from girls who clearly weren't feeling my outfit choices or aren't used to a new style-goddess in the mix (probably the latter). At the end of the day, your choices of personal attire and the way in which you carry yourself are always on the chopping block at any university, but also who cares?? Situations like these are where your personal growth really develops and you start to realize that while everyone is running on campus sporting enough The North Face and Kate Spade to be sales representatives, you are individualizing yourself.
STEP 4: Protect your mind
I came into college hearing about all-nighters at the library, blood sweat and tears, and breakdowns galore, but here's the thing, the majority of these can be avoided. I, to this day, have yet to pull an all-nighter, and do not plan on it any time soon. Time management is key in college and with it comes the rewards of a happy mind and a healthy body. Breakdowns, on the other hand, will happen when bad days come around. Just make sure you've got mom & dad on speed dial.
STEP 5: Craft your own path
As a wrap up step, this one involves waking up and realizing that your time should not be wasted following your peers down the conveyor belt to corporate America. Rather, you should spend this time imagining and acting on ideas to differentiate what you get out of your college experience. Whether that be a dope new website (*dusts shoulders off*), or a million dollar idea, make sure you never let the masses stifle your personal growth.
