Plugged In: Still by The Japanese House
Still, the first single from The Japanese House, manages to balance both poetic, painful lyrics and production that, like the waves on its cover, rises slowly and softly, then swells to an immense and powerful high.
This single is stunning. Produced by Matty Healy and George Daniel of The 1975, Still creates a soundscape full of juxtaposition: pain and pleasure, sweeping highs and minimal lows, 80's synths and earthy vocal tones. With a voice that is more than a little reminiscent of Imogen Heap, and a sound that retains elements of her producers' unique sound, the elusive Amber Bain has still managed to create a wholly unique and genuine work of art, bolstered by the simple beauty of her EP on which this song appears, entitled Pools To Bathe In. Quiet, but powerful, and provides all the #emotion one would expect from a single with a cover image of a faded pastel ocean.
